Dachshunds. Two-dogs long and half-a-dog high.
The name in German means badger hound, and that is what they were bred for...
going down holes and doing battle with ferocious badgers.
So they are recklessly brave, very feisty, and rugged individualists with personality to spare. They come in six varieties: Short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired, all three of which come in standard and miniature sizes. Buddy is a long-haired miniature. He is seven years old and weighs in at 14 pounds. Apparently the recipe for the original dachshund was basset and terrier. The long-haired has a bit of cocker spaniel in there, as well. They are fastidious household companions with a lively intelligence and a remarkably retentive memory. They are con artists when it comes to begging. Buddy would have you believe that he is constantly starving. He loves riding in the car (always in the passenger seat) with his head out the window. His favorite drive is to a park where there are squirrels. Oh, and those short legs can really run!
He has produced six puppies and is again looking for a wife. |

Meet one of Buddy's sons, Rerun. He is now (2002) five years old... the same age Buddy was when he sired him.Buddy's original owner had pick of the litter and promised the little critter to his son back in Ontario. He chose Rerun (named by the Ontario son.) Rerun is the only offspring we and Buddy helped raise. We had him live with us for several months. He and Buddy would tussle and nip one another and had a great time. It was a sad day for us when he moved back east.
Rerun was the only one of the litter with predominantly black fur. Magic, a daughter, has identical markings to Buddy. She is currently considering a lawsuit against Buddy for being a deadbeat Dad. |
